In the past decade, there has been an important change in the medical education scene in India, as evidenced by the incredible 125% growth in MBBS seat availability. This increase is the result of a deliberate attempt to meet the expanding need for medical specialists in the face of an aging population and increased health issues. Increasing access to medical education, and the increase of seats aims to raise the general standard of healthcare provided in the country. There are significant concerns regarding faculty, facilities, and the future of medical education in India as more aspirant physicians are admitted.
Growth in Medical Colleges and Seats
India now has almost twice as many medical colleges as it did in 2013–14 (387 vs. 766 in 2024–25), an increase of 98%. 379 new medical facilities have been established as a result of this boom, spanning the public and private domains. There will be 423 state-run medical colleges and 343 private ones in operation nationwide as of 2024–2025. The nation's healthcare system will always have a stable supply of qualified physicians thanks to this growth of the medical school infrastructure, which is necessary to fulfill the growing demand for healthcare professionals.
There is a strong correlation between the growth in medical institutions and the availability of MBBS and PG seats. MBBS seats increased from 51,348 in 2013–14 to 1,15,812 in 2024–25, a 125% increase. Aspiring students around India now have easier access to medical school because of this large increase of 64,464 seats. A noteworthy 127% increase in postgraduate seats has also occurred, with the number going from 31,185 in 2013–14 to 73,111 in 2024–25—a gain of 39,460 seats in just ten years.
The country needs more doctors and specialists, and these increases in undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats will go a long way toward meeting that requirement. Increased access to qualified healthcare workers will benefit patients by improving the standard of care and relieving pressure on the current healthcare system.
New Darbhanga AIIMS
To enhance the medical education and healthcare accessible in underprivileged areas, the government has directed its efforts towards the creation of new institutions like AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences). An important step forward in this direction is the planned AIIMS in Darbhanga. The 150.13 acres of land allocated for the campus have been finalized after a three-year delay, and the foundation stone for this new AIIMS will be set in the upcoming months.
The launch of AIIMS Darbhanga is a component of a larger initiative to address the quality and affordability gap in tertiary healthcare. AIIMS Darbhanga is anticipated to relieve pressure on current healthcare facilities in Bihar and neighboring states by offering a broad variety of specialist medical services once it opens for business. The organization will also provide chances for medical research and education, producing a new generation of healthcare workers
