RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE
DRUG STANDARDIZATION PROGRAM
Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Assistant Director (Pharmacology), DS In-charge spoke about Drug standardization, Pharmacovigilance, Publication etc.)
The Department of Drug Standardization refines the quality, authenticity, and scientific validity of medicinal plants, as well as medicines (mother tinctures) used in homeopathy. The objective of this department is to conduct research to enhance the quality of homeopathic pharmacopoeial monographs and to work on new research projects. The department plays a leading role in advanced research and studies in the field of homeopathic medicine. The department have State of Art laboratories, including those for pharmacognosy, chemistry, zebrafish, pharmacology, microbiology, molecular biology, and an in-house pharmacy. Additionally, the institute has facilities like an animal house for testing homeopathic medicines.
In the botany department, complete pharmacognostic profiles are prepared through botanical surveys, identification, botanical authentication, and both macroscopic and microscopic testing. The chemistry department evaluates purity using various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, as well as physicochemical profiles, heavy metal profiling, and pesticide residue testing to ensure the quality of plants and homeopathic medicines. The pharmacology department conducts assessments of microbial contamination, toxicity testing in experimental animals, and therapeutic evaluations. Currently, there are four ongoing projects in the botany and chemistry departments. In the ongoing DNA barcoding project in the botany department, DNA barcodes for two medicinal plants have been created, and standards for six medicinal plants have been prepared in the image atlas and four in the HPTLC atlas, benefiting various researchers, Homoeopathic medicine manufacturers, the pharmaceutical industry, and students. Additionally, the Department of Drug Standardization is developing standards for medicinal plants for the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), focusing on five medicinal plants over the past 100 days, with BIS standards for two plants set to be published soon.
In the pharmacology department, various research projects are underway, including studies on the effects of homeopathic medicines on pain in zebrafish, the safety of homeopathic medicines in laboratory animals, toxicity testing of medicines on zebrafish embryos, and the effects of homeopathic medicines against multi-drug resistance in urinary infections. We have also initiated work on the effects of homeopathic medicines on arthritis in laboratory animals.
MoUs: Recently, we signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs)—two at the CCRH headquarters level with SRM and Lucknow University, and one at the institutional level with Manywar Kashi Ram Degree College—to promote research. Under this, BSc students will receive training in various scientific techniques.
NABL 17025:Recently, labs underwent a final assessment for NABL 17025, further enhancing the research capabilities and quality.
